Is Pink Discharge Considered Menstruation, and When Should One Resume Prayer?

Question

I have a question regarding prayer and per period pink discharge. Please don’t refer me to another fatwa and answer my question. My period is due in 3 days and I wiped today and I saw light pinkish reddish marks on the tissue. I’m unsure if this is the start of my period or not. Usually the first couple days of my period is extremely light so I can’t confirm till a couple days. I’ve assumed it’s my period and stopped praying. If it hasn’t started, am I sinful? Do I need to pray them again?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His Slave and Messenger.

Pink discharge is considered part of menstrual blood. If you see it during a time when menstruation is possible, then it is treated as menstruation, and you should stop praying.

However, if it stops before completing a full day and night, then you should resume prayer according to the majority of scholars, since the minimum duration of menstruation is one day and one night. It is only confirmed to be menstruation if the bleeding returns and the total duration—combining the initial and returning bleeding—reaches at least one full day and night.

According to the Maaliki school of thought, there is no minimum duration for menstruation. Based on this view, if the pink discharge stops, then you should perform the ritual bath and resume prayer, and this is the safer approach.

Lastly, if the bleeding returns within a time frame in which menstruation is still possible, then you are considered menstruating again.

Allah Knows best.
