Gunmen Attack Nigerian Oil Pipelines

Nigeria's security forces are on high alert after gunmen attacked several major oil pipelines. A series of explosions have killed at least 11 people, and dozens more have been injured.

The attacks occured about 50 kilometres from the major oil terminal in Port Harcourt. The attackers used dynamite and apparently knew what they were doing, because oil supplies have been severely disrupted.
The explosions has forced Nigeria to cut back oil production by at least sevenpercent.Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil exporter and the eighth biggest in the world. While it is not known who blew up the pipelines, armed groups in the remote region often attack oil installations to put pressure on Western oil giants there to redistribute some of their profits locally.
