Chechen Fighters Kill Six Russian Soldiers
Six Russian soldiers have been killed and eight others wounded in a clash with Chechen fighters in the war-torn southern region of Chechnya, the Interfax news agency reported. The soldiers attacked the fighters after spotting them approaching the village of Dyshne-Vedeno around midnight on Sunday, it said. Three Chechens were killed and one was detained in the skirmish, it said. The Kremlin says the military phase of its campaign in Chechnya is over and it is pushing ahead with a peace plan including a local leadership election in October. But Russian forces in Chechnya have come under almost daily attacks, including a string of bomb attacks in the last few months. **PHOTO CAPTION*** A Russian soldier patrols a suburb of the Chechen capital Grozny.
