Fires Contained in France but not in Portugal
Fire fighters in south east France say deadly blazes that have ravaged thousands of hectares of land are now contained. Though the fires are still burning, strong winds that were fanning the flames have now dropped. Water bombers from Spain, Greece and Russia have been drafted in to work along side the French aircraft. A 29 year old man has admitted to starting some of the forest fires that have torn through the French Riviera and killed at least four tourists. He said he acted out of spite after being rejected as a voluntary fireman. High temperatures combined with dry weather have turned swathes of Europe into a virtual tinderbox. In Portugal, fires are still raging and have the claimed the lives of two people. One was an elderly man trying to help firefighters, another died when his car was engulfed by flames. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Raging fire : Firemen battle bushfires in the hills east of Salon-de-Provence near Lambesc, southern France.
