Chief UN War Crimes Prosecutor Tells Balkan Nations to do Better
The Chief United Nations War Crimes Prosecutor has accused several former Yugoslav Republics of not helping the Tribunal in the Hague. In a damning report Carla del Ponte singled out Serbia and Montenegro saying she believed many top war crimes suspects were hiding there. "I regret to have to report to you that Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, the Republic of Srpska and the Bosnian-Croat party to the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina have not achieved, so far, full cooperation with the tribunal. Our cooperation with Belgrade remains very difficult and heavily politicised whether with regards to arrests and transfer of fugitives or access to documents and waivers for high level witnesses," said Del Ponte Topping the list of most wanted suspects are Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and his right hand man, General Ratko Mladic, both indicted in 1995 for genocide. Del Ponte said that despite precise information given to Serb authorities they had failed to make any arrests. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Radovan Karadzic (L) and Ratko Mladic.
