Iranian Students Demonstrate to Mark Anniversary of US Hostage Taking
Some 10,000 Iranian students have taken to the streets of the capital to mark a decisive anniversary in the history of the nation. In 1979 during the Iranian Revolution a group of the students seized the US embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. It was an incident that led to the breaking of diplomatic ties between the two countries. 24 years on relations between Washington and Tehran remain fraught and the demonstration set the stage for students to vent anti-american feelings. They chanted "Death to America" and some openly pledged their desire to become 'martyrs'. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Iranian protesters burn a U.S. flag during a demonstration opposite a picture of an American hostage in front of the former U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, Nov., 4, 2003.
